Hydrogen

At Phillips 66, we believe many forms of energy will be needed in a sustainable energy future. We see promise in hydrogen and are working to leverage our expertise and expand our capabilities to capture market share and growth.

Refuelling the Humber Refinery project

This project aims to fuel the Humber Refinery’s industrial heaters with up to 100% lower-carbon hydrogen to support the reduction of carbon emissions. The heaters are integral to the refining process because they provide the heat necessary to convert hydrocarbons to transportation fuels and other products used in everyday society.

As part of our journey to reduce carbon emissions at the Humber Refinery, we are assessing hydrogen refuelling within our industrial heaters. Our recent technical report demonstrates that it is technically feasible to switch industrial heaters from refinery fuel gas to up to 100% hydrogen through relatively cost-effective retrofits, mainly burner replacements, avoiding the high costs associated with replacement furnaces. The study also provides valuable insights for various process services, heater types and configurations, demonstrating the ability to apply hydrogen refuelling across a range of applications.

The report was supported by The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (now DESNZ) who provided co-funding for Phillips 66 Limited’s Refuelling the Humber Refinery feasibility study through the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund Phase 1 programme delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
