{"id":2403,"date":"2020-05-01T05:18:26","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T05:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kendallmotoroil.com\/?p=2403"},"modified":"2024-10-16T09:46:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T14:46:41","slug":"your-quick-guide-to-the-ilsac-gf-6-and-api-sp-motor-oil-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.phillips66.com\/kendallmotoroilcom\/news\/your-quick-guide-to-the-ilsac-gf-6-and-api-sp-motor-oil-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Quick Guide to the ILSAC GF-6 and API SP Motor Oil Standards."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As a lube shop owner or consumer, you may have seen quite a bit of buzz about the new ILSAC GF-6 and AP SP motor oil specifications, coming into effect May 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what are these specifications all about and why do we need them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What You Need to Know About ILSAC GF-6 and API SP<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ILSAC GF-6 and API SP are new, higher performance passenger car oil categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ILSAC GF-6<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>GF-6 will replace the GF-5 category and is divided into two separate sub-categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GF-6A<\/strong>: Fully backward-compatible for older vehicles that previously used GF-5 oils.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GF-6B<\/strong>: Covers the new, lower-viscosity oil grade OW-16 and will NOT be backward-compatible in most cases (unless specified by the OEM).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:58px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-block-psx-widen-image\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillips66.widen.net\/content\/67yjnlwtnu\/png\/P66_ILSACGF-6-300x193.png?position=c&#038;color=ffffffff&#038;quality=80&#038;u=crabjf&#038;retina=true\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>API SP <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SP is the API\u2019s newest service category. ILSAC GF-6 applies to the fuel efficient viscosity grades, while API SP applies to those heavier viscosity grades like 10W40 and 20W50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>API SP will be fully backward-compatible with previous API service categories, including API SN PLUS, SN, SM, SL or SJ.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-block-psx-widen-image\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillips66.widen.net\/content\/ugomghozvw\/png\/GF6_EverythingYouNeedToKnow_2.png?position=c&#038;color=ffffffff&#038;quality=80&#038;u=crabjf&#038;retina=true\" width=\"290\" height=\"283\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Have These New Motor Oil Specifications Been Developed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ILSAC GF-6 and API SP have been developed in response to three major drivers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Environmental Regulations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>New environmental regulations, focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving fuel economy, have required OEMs to make changes, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New engine technologies<\/strong>: OEMs have developed lighter weight and higher performance engine technologies that require more advanced motor oils.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low-viscosity motor oils<\/strong>: OEMs have pushed for the development of lower-viscosity oils that also help improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Market Forces<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Today OEMs are being challenged to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Climate change<\/strong>: 66% of American\u2019s are at least \u201csomewhat worried\u201d about climate change <sup><small>1<\/small><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel economy<\/strong>: 88% of American\u2019s agree that \u201cautomakers should continue to improve fuel economy for all vehicle types.\u201d <sup><small>2<\/small><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><sup><small>1<\/small><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/climatecommunication.yale.edu\/publications\/climate-change-in-the-american-mind-november-2019\/4\/\">https:\/\/climatecommunication.yale.edu\/publications\/climate-change-in-the-american-mind-november-2019\/4\/<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><sup><small>2<\/small><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/advocacy.consumerreports.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Consumer-Reports-Fuel-Economy-Survey-Report-2019-1.pdf\">https:\/\/advocacy.consumerreports.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Consumer-Reports-Fuel-Economy-Survey-Report-2019-1.pdf<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.
